Seychelles Rejoining SADC
August, 2006
The Seychelles rejoined the Southern African Development Community (SADC) that had cancelled its arrears of USD 2.5 million in fees. Although the sum was a big loss to SADC, its members wanted to readmit the Seychelles into the economic group and, so, they welcomed the Seychelles to rejoin SADC.
The Seychelles joined SADC and quit it in 2004 because of the expenses it could not afford itself.
But then it announced its intention to rejoin SADC because Foreign Affairs started playing a key role in promoting the country's interests in international economy.
As far as the Seychelles intended to rejoin SADC in 2006, the leaders of the bloc have discussed its request this summer.
SADC had written off arrears amounting previously accumulated by Seychelles, but the contributions of 2% towards SADC amounting to USD 280 000 per year would still stand for the country.
