Seychelles gets high international ratings
September, 2006

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services assigned its 'B' long-term and 'B' short-term foreign currency sovereign ratings, and its 'B+' long-term and 'B' short-term local currency sovereign ratings on Seychelles as well as characterized its outlook as stable.

So, Seychelles' economy and investments in the jurisdiction have received a great boost following the official announcement of its ratings by Standard & Poor's.

For the period of last 10 years, Seychelles' economic and social performances have been observed by this reputed international organisation.

Its ratings are supported by many factors. One of them is a strong fiscal performance - the country's fiscal management has had firm surpluses related to a strong administration's commitment to working for the future. The ratings are also supported by high levels of human development (high per capita income, literacy and education standards, health) and social and political stability.

The main factors that constrain the ratings are high public sector debt and impairment of fiscal and external flexibility, fixed administratively set exchange rate as well as the vulnerability of the Seychelles' economic growth and external position.

All in all, the ratings by Standard & Poor's are a great achievement of the Seychelles government. Furthermore, Seychelles government has a strong potential ti improve the ratings and get them higher. The Corporate Manager of the Barclays Bank, John Esther, congratulated the Seychelles government with such a success and noted that with good ratings the country and its private businesses could get more access to loans from international financial institutions with good interest rates.
